The Doubtful Site (Engulfing and Radiating Shapes)
2018
Aluminum,resin, sand
The Doubtful Site series is presented as a constellation of typical public spaces such as stadiums, monuments, parks and passages in our urban environment. While each piece corresponds to a location people frequent or gather, the diversity of textures, materials, forms, and constructs invites the viewer to develop their own perception of these sites. The Doubtful Site (Engulfing and Radiating Shapes) is a ring structure composed of several stepped sculptures. The stairs suggest a representative form that exists in the artist’s previous work, but which no longer appears as a monomer, serving instead as a constituent element in a larger structure. This enclosed building structure, with its performance and gathering functions, establishes a central focal point and bidirectional relationship between center and periphery.
The study and exploration of public space in Nabuqi’s works has never broken from its relationship with human beings. In the Doubtful Site series, the body no longer appears as a molded visual element, but as an embodiment of the viewing experience, encircling and gazing at an independent object. It is clear that this relationship remains to some extent in the works of the exhibition, but at this point the body is in a more absent form, represented in the sculpture by the concept of a particular public space referring to an inevitable connection with the crowd.
