The Fragments series was begun in 2007. During a car accident in 2005, Zhao Zhao’s head was smashed against the windshield of his car, leaving a spiderweb-like pattern of cracks across the glass. The artist then removed and preserved the cracked glass, engraving the exact pattern of the impact into a medium sized steel plate. He continued to replicate this pattern on various different materials of varying sizes and dimensions, thereby ceaselessly recording and recreating this brush with death.
