In a New Era – The Revelation of Adam and Eve

1985

Oil on canvas

196×164 cm

The trend of reason in 1985 started in the international exhibition of youth artworks. Works such as In a New Era-The Revelation of Adam and Eve and Longing for Peace abandoned a sentimental composition and opted for a composition that highlighted a conceptual framework. The space separation and object positioning are determined mostly by the artists rather than by any specific moment in a realistic scene. The spirit of reason was enlightening, which led to the unfolding of the “’85 Art Trend”. Back in early 1985, the movement mainly focused on the reflection on painting patterns and individuality, while the reflection on the culture was yet to become a major aspect.

In a New Era-The Revelation of Adam and Eve by Meng Luding and Zhang Qun was undoubtedly the most eye-catching piece in the exhibition “Artworks by Emerging Young Artists in China” held in the National Art Museum of China in May 1985. It is a milestone in the art history, as the recognition of “reason” and cultural criticism it demonstrates mark the start of a new artistic trend in the country.
