Xiaozhuang, one of the first female press photographers cultivated after the founding of New China, photographed many social movements such as agricultural cooperation, public-private partnership, Great Leap Forward, People’s Commune, pumping out steel movement, sending educated youth to the countryside, sending cadres to work at the grass-roots level and the Cultural Revolution. These movements she photographed almost recorded the social and political conditions from the early days of the nation to the late years of the Cultural Revolution. Xiaozhuang photographed these while she was serving as press photographer in Xinhua Daily in Jiangsu. As a press photographer, Xiaozhuang captured many momentary and dynamic scenes in big events, which requires acute observing ability and consummate skills. When enjoying Xiaozhuang’s photographs, it seems we can still hear the enthusiastic slogans and cheers from the crowd in the images even after half a century.
