Dong Qichang Project No.5

2007

Mixed materials on canvas

128×416 cm

To Shang Yang, Dong Qichang’s name is like an iconic symbol in Chinese traditional art and culture. That represents a kind of appeal of humanity in the Eastern context. The word “project”, on the other way, is a discourse and practice in the context of contemporary art. Thus, Shang’s placing this word in the title is emblematic of cultural identity. The “Dong Qichang Project No.5” is a continuation of Shang’s artistic style. Dong Qichang Project -5 continued Shang Yang’s previous creation method. The picture is like the Chinese painting on the long papers, and the hue is simple and elegant. Yet the hitsui and rhythm in traditional Eastern paintings have been replaced by many modern forms. The fun of the dispersive composition has been “destroyed” by collage and montage. The stiff straight lines and the uncluttered geometrical shapes separated the picture heartlessly, which convey a kind of helpless, fractured and uncomfortable feeling. His works reflected his multiple introspection and criticism towards the relationship between culture and nature in contemporary discourse, as well as the exploration on the schema language that has been established.
